I hope I’m not showing my partisanship too much when I say I find it harder to complain about politics since Barack Obama has become president. He’s been in office three months short of a year if you can believe that. The BBC America homepage informed me it’s already been a year since the collapse of Lehman Brothers. This is one of the many things that got us into the economic mess we’re in now. It arguably propelled Obama to the presidency.
Turning on any news program this summer seemed to lead to one of two things. Democrats hailing the president and Republicans demonizing him. Thank your respective gods for the return of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report after a three week hiatus. Yes, I am a journalism student and my favorite news anchors are comedians. The real anchors have become nothing but jokes.
We have a president who constantly speaks of bipartisanship, so why is it every so called respected person in politics is choosing sides like cliques in a high school lunch room? It’s like watching Revenge of the Nerds or one of the terrible sequels.
Obama’s health care address to congress was a great example of this behavior. The Republican’s, or as I like to call them; the Stubborn Party just sat there looking mean while the Dem.’s sprung up like whack-a-moles every time the president opened his mouth. America is built on dissenting opinions but come on; Obama even got John McCain to smile during the address. Let the record show McCain has the smile of an elderly, pedophile, jack-o-lantern but it was a sincere one.
How is it the Republican’s have become so good at the things they used to hate the Democrats for doing? No one ever yelled ‘You lie,’ during a George W. Bush address, except for me of coarse. I mean old George practically had ‘I’m a liar’ tattooed on his forehead. In 2007 Rep. Wilson’s outburst would’ve been called treason by Sean Hannity.
They’re even better at protesting then the Dem.’s were! Or they are at least as good at it; holding up signs of Obama portrayed as Hitler as Bush was previously. If it feels like I’m repeating myself here it’s because I said the same things when I wrote about Obama’s first 100 days in office four months ago. Basically mass political polarization is getting us nowhere slow. The real truth is if you ask everyday citizens for their views they are not nearly as extreme.
Our political representatives are setting a bad example for our country and portraying a less then admirable image to our peers across the globe. They are behaving like children.
There is nothing Obama can do to please the right. It’s amazing how the same people who admonished dissent for Bush on 9/12 are so quick to adopt what have been deemed liberal practices for so long. Great job Republicans, you’ve become everything you hated for so long.
Now as a journalism student I’ve been working hard to look at both sides of these things. The Democrats have also become everything they’ve hated for so long, the president’s patsies. Obama is like every Dem.’s cool black friend.
Everybody needs to grow up! Of course race is a factor in this political environment. Former Prez. Jimmy Carter knows this saying, “There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president.” It’s amazing how Obama dodges questions of his race whenever they come up. It’s a shame Carter is being admonished for his remarks.
To believe racism doesn’t play a role is just plain ignorant. I’m not calling the Republican Party racist, don’t get it twisted. I mean the party chairman is Michael Steele after all. But try telling the African-Americans whom were viciously beaten by white McCain supporters after the election results were broadcast that racism isn’t an issue.
Alright, let’s switch gears. No one else will tackle the race factor and I’m not about to be the one to do it. How about the hot topic crises of the day; healthcare?
I’m so glad Obama held the address and outright debunked pretty much all of the lies being passed around by the right. There has yet to be a perfect answer to this problem but Obama has offered a plausible solution.
In this debate there is also a need for collaboration amongst our congressmen. Obama is correct when he says we are the only one of our peers who does not practice national health care. It has worked arguably well in other countries.
Canada for example has what’s called a two tier system similar to the one Obama has in mind. Some people have private insurance and the rest have public health care. The two ends compete and those with private insurance receive arguably better care. However, everyone is still covered. One would argue this would be a step in the right direction. Of coarse it is truly hard to compare the U.S. and Canada if you factor in the population difference.
The Obama bill may not be flawless but congress is not being helpful. Our congressmen are allowing their party lines to define them more than the people they represent. The way things are going nothing will be solved.

President Obama is keeping the ball rolling on becoming everything that is the opposite of the Bush administration. In those days we didn’t torture. Now we do torture…or at least we did…maybe. Nah, but seriously…we tortured prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. There is really no other way to describe water-boarding, exposure to extreme temperatures, and being slammed into walls. Some of the practices were a bit on the kinky and masochistic side. Sometimes guards would take prisoners clothes; leaving them naked and do sexual acts to them while they were restrained or tied up. Plus some of them died at our hands.

All of this info was in the public sphere long before President Obama’s administration started pushing for the release of the Bush Torture Memos. Graphic pictures of Abu-Ghraib were leaked to the media quite a while ago and many a documentary has been produced on the subject; like Taxi to the Darkside

. There have also been numerous series on these events on the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, and some of the 24 hour news networks as well. So why is this such a big deal now? None of this is news. I signed on-line petitions and marched in Washington D.C. to oust Bush and Cheney and the gang for war crimes when they were still in office. But now that they are out, this is too little too late.

I understand Obama is trying to undue all of Bush’s damage but he’s making America into its own worst enemy. Did we punish ourselves for African American slavery, Japanese internment camps, or dropping the A-Bomb? The past eight years where a dark time in America’s history, but we can’t change that. The best thing we can do is move on and make sure it doesn’t happen again and that we stay true to our ideals as Americans. Although I’m still all for throwing Bush and Cheney in a jail cell.

So there’s been lots of talk about pirates in the news. Pirates have seized a total of 14 American vessels in the past weeks. Screw the war on terrorism, we just entered the war on piratism. But no seriously, Pirates are making a come back.
Now don’t get confused, these are new-aged Somalian pirates. I understand there may be some doubt involved since we’ve only recently been using “pirate” to describe collegians who download content illegally off the Internet and scraggly actor Johnny Depp. I mean seriously, pirates? You might as well have reported American tourists being attacked by ninjas.

It doesn’t really matter because President Obama made an executive decision and had troops shot to kill in order to save the captives on Maersk Alabama. I’m a pacifist but I was pretty impressed to hear that our guys snuck on the ship and sniped out three of the pirates. Obama came through once again showing he is not afraid to make such decisions. Jack Sparrow wasn’t answering his calls and he was busy buying a puppy for Sasha and Malia, so he gave the orders. So go America! We are as good at kicking pirate ass as an immortal child in tight green pants.

Peter Pan V.s. Captain Hook

The pirate attacks have continued none-the-less. Truthfully we should of fixed up Somalia back in the 90s when Bill Clinton was still president. The continent of Africa is an unbelievable disatraf#^*. (I should really trademark that.) I personally hope this will work as a wake up call. We’ve been acting like world police but we always seem to neglect Africa. Hell maybe we are the world police, racial profiling and all. I really hope this helps bring our attention to other things like Darfur. I am usually against America interfering in other countries affairs, but Africa really needs our help. They have descended into chaos and are ages behind us…Which is why they still have pirates.

Hello all! I hope you took care of your taxes this Tuesday better than our Secretary of the Treasury, Timothy Geithner has in the past. I personally am looking forward to a 130$ return and planning to spend it on a tattoo.
Anyway, I’m not sure if you noticed, but something strange happened this tax season. The good news is the phrase “Tea-bagging” became kosher for television. The bad news? Well, To put it bluntly…we somehow entered into a parallel dimension. Yes that’s right, we’ve entered a new reality. A political Twilight Zone where liberals and conservatives have switched roles.
How did this happen? Noones really sure, but lets take a look at the evidence.
This tax season was marked by semi-mass TEA Parties. Now when I say TEA Parties I’m not talking about the Boston one. Tea in this instance stands for Taxed Enough Already. President Obama has installed a 3% tax hike and of course, much like in response to everything else he’s done Republicans are pissed. These people don’t realize however that Bush’s tax cuts were a big influence on our growing deficit and are partly responsible for the bind we are in right now.
Now, I’ve been sensing some sort of phenomenon ever since Obama entered office, but this confirmed it. Since the beggining of his presidency Obama has become the Bizzaro Bush. He’s been slashing Bush legislation left and right. But it’s not just about them, the whole political environment is ass-backwards.

During the Bush administration there were mass protests by liberals. They held signs calling Bush a tyrannical dictator. Some had pictures portraying him as Adolf Hitler. Fox News Pundits like Sean Hannity were denouncing the protesters; almost to the point of claiming dissent was unpatriotic. But if you watched Fox News this Tuesday you got to see hypocrisy at it’s finest. Hannity and company were praising conservative protesters holding signs calling Barak Obama a tyrannical dictator and portraying him as Adolf Hitler.

Iraq War Protestors portraying Bush as Hitler

Seriously?

What the hell just happened? Dissent became patriotic. Liberals have become the mindless drones standing behind their tyrannical leader and the conservatives have become the crazy, protesting, silent minority. Fox New has become the voice of the people and CNN is the establishment. Or at least that’s what we’re led to believe. And somewhere, some time there is another reality where Senator John McCain has become president. In this reality he is fixing up the mess left after Al Gore and John Kerry while leftest protesters hold signs up portraying him as Adolf Hitler.

George Bush will always be remembered as the guy who got us into endless war. The War on Terrorism is what he called it. It was supposed to be the war to end all wars but it is the war that will never end.
The name has a nice and powerful ring to it, but it is a contradiction. A war on terror is like a cheese on cheese sandwich. I don’t care what anyone says, you don’t fight fire with fire. That’s just stupid. You fight fire with water because water puts out fire.
Anyway it doesn’t matter, Obama will be remembered as the guy who was left with the last president’s mess. With this and the economy crisis that seemed to pop up unexpectedly right before his election it is an unfortunate time for Obama to be president. I think his ability will always be tainted by these things. It’s not that I don’t think Obama can do it. I don’t think anyone can do it. I hate to be all doom and gloom but we are a nation of war; we always have been and we always will. Our history is a time-line of conflict with short instances of semi-peaceful stability.
Bush was also known for his cutsie names for wars. Remember Operation Iraqi Freedom and Shock and Awe? Well now it appears Obama’s administration is doing the same thing. It’s no longer a world wide war on terror; it’s an Over Seas Contingency Program. Also it’s not terrorism; it’s man-made disasters. Over Seas Contingency Program sounds like a business trip or a semester abroad. Also man-made disasters? That’s a little broad. George Bush’s presidency was a man-made disaster! Let’s stop treating us like we are children huh? We are at war and it’s serious.
I find it funny that Obama gained support from the anti-war crowd (Of which I’m part of.) and now these same people are outraged about his plan to send more troops to Afghanistan. He vowed he would do this in his campaign. We did not elect an anti-war president. We elected the president who promised to fight the “right” war. War is never right but I’m all for finding Osama bin Laden. I didn’t mind seeing Saddam Hussein go down either but it was gone about in the wrong way. In the end who really ended up on top? No one, that’s who.

War is an evitable part of the human existence. What we need to do is not perpetuate any more war than is needed. We are all going to be competing for resources; but we need to learn that you can gain more from allainces than grudges.

I’m glad President Obama found the time amongst economy and foreign relation problems to pass legislation on stem cell research. I think we’ve been sitting on a goldmine of opportunity with this science which was chronically shot down by the likes of George W. Bush. At first I loved the push because it was a complete slap to the face to all the Christian fundamentalists who kept Bush in office and rallied to ‘raise the (Mc) Cain’ back in November. I thought this was an odd time for Obama to pull out the controversial card. Then, I thought about it; Obama is making an opportunity out of our economic crisis. Not only will this finally allow for the growth of a scientific breakthrough, it will make money and jobs.
Republicans have been calling Obama out for pushing funds into things like health care, education, and science because they fear it will just put us more in debt. But the improvement of these will in turn improve our economy. I mean God forbid we should support things like health care and education. Better education means better workers and leaders of our future, and I don’t think I should have to explain the benefits of better health care. Investing money into scientific research of things like stem cells, climate change, and alternate fuel sources will create new jobs. Jobs that we desperately need.
These are sciences which we can all benefit from. It’s no secret we are going to run out of oil eventually and we can’t turn to another fossil fuel because we will just find ourselves in the same hole later. It is important we know what is happening with climate change as it pertains to our very survival. And do you realize what stem cells can do? It can rebuild damaged organs; alcohol poisoned livers and destroyed brain cells. This science could help us to prevent and even obliterate some of our worst diseases.
Critics of Obama’s spending campaigns and bailouts are worried that our debt will be double what it is now in the future as a consequence. This is the time to spend, especially on things that will be beneficial in other ways to our country. Our economy thrives on business and every good business man knows you have to spend money to make money.
New Orleans Senator Bobby Jindal, the Republican Party’s answer to John Kerry has been rallying to get his peers to vote against Obama’s plans. Yet he has failed to come up with a better one himself. Of course there is risk but that’s the name of the game. Jindal is just using this to gain support to run for president in 2012.
The economy is not some sort of entity, it is us. We are the economy; we can and do control it. Obama realizes this and that is why he is spending on opportunities to counter a crisis. In a way we can use stem cells to rebuild our economy.

Glenn Beck is crying. He may say he’s not affiliated with any party, but he’s basically just a sad Republican. Sure he smart-mouthed the new party Chairman Michael Steele but it’s probably just because he shares a certain resemblance to our president. Either way, it’s not a good look Glenn.
The Republican Party is furious. They may have lost the election but they are not giving up the fight. President Obama and the Congress have been bending over backwards just to get some slack from the Republicans.
I know when I started doing this blog I said I was a non-biased citizen. However, I am a registered Democrat so I’m going to speak as one for just a moment. We have a Democratic President and a Democratic Party majority in both the House and Senate. We should be able to get President Obama’s plans off the ground without this much trouble. I’ve been watching and reading the news and it sounds to me like the Democrats are tip-toeing up to the Republicans’ door and asking oh-so politely, “Would you pretty please pass our President’s bills?” The Democrats need to grow some balls pronto. They didn’t give us the same chances when Bush was in office and they controlled Congress. It was very much the same story then, the Democrats cowering in the presence of the Republicans. Come on, this is why liberals are viewed as soft. Just because you don’t believe in war it doesn’t mean you can’t bust a few heads. The Republicans have always been better at pushing people around.
This is what it’s come to. Congress is like a high school cafeteria; all the Democrats are sitting together, and the republicans got their own table. During the Bush years the Democrats had to duck plenty of times due to flying mystery meat (The countless mystery legislation acts under the Bush administration.). But the Democrats have the bigger table now; it’s time to start throwing some food back. We all saw what happened when the Republicans got free reign over the government, now it’s our turn.
Okay so there’s my biased opinion, at least I know it. The truth is there is no Democratic Congress and there is no Republican Congress. There is only the American Congress. It’s ridiculous to think just because President Obama is a Democrat, all of the Republican Congressmen must vote against him. This polarization is childish and is setting a horrible example.
It seems I say this in every post but in these times of great struggle we have to be willing to compromise. It doesn’t help if every time President Obama declares the sky blue, Republicans swear it’s red. I don’t agree with everything Obama says, and I think I’ve shown that in my posts. Erase the party lines and just remember that we are all Americans. There, now doesn’t that sound touching (Or incredibly cheesy)? Almost brings a tear to your eye.

It’s been almost a week since Obama made his speech to Congress, but I’ve yet to talk about it so I’ll do it now. I’m not going to lie; I missed the speech during its initial airing. Good thing there’s Youtube! This is still unfortunate however because Jon Stewart and The Onion have already come up with all the good jokes. This won’t stop me from trying though.
Let me say first, it’s great to have a president who is a great public speaker. But I can hardly listen to Obama for an hour every time he speaks, I got stuff to do. From the sound of it, Obama also has plenty to do. He has shown admirable action since day one. He shut down Guantanamo, passed the SCHIPs bill, the home mortgage bill, and most of the proposed Economic Stimulus Plan. Granted the consequences of these actions, be they good or bad have yet to be seen. It’s still impressive.
Obama’s first major televised address to Congress was not a State of the Union. In a lot of ways it was just another campaign speech. Hey man, you already won. Stop telling us what you’re going to do and do it already. I still feel the same way I’ve felt since I first started hearing Obama’s plans for our country. Is he for real? You’ve got to understand I, like most people my age don’t trust anything coming from Washington. I’m still struggling with the fact I actually like my president.
Nancy Pelosi is obviously ecstatic. You could’ve had a pretty fun party game if you drank a beer or took a shot every time she shot up out of her chair to applaud. Joe Biden seemed to be getting tired toward the end of it, hesitating to rise. Pelosi made sure everyone got their exercise that night. Would the real Nancy Pelosi please sit down!
Obama has set the bar pretty high for himself, but he seems to be known for this. I like the way he used words like “We” and “Us”, alluding to a sense of unity. A few “I”s got in there but he definitely pushed the idea of a unified struggle. The theme of the night was “WE will.” He spoke on basically every problem we are currently facing with amazing confidence. Yet somewhere between promises for education and healthcare reform I found myself asking, is he,…hope-mongering? He kept it positive. He didn’t once mention the troop surge he has planned for Afghanistan.
I’m concerned Obama doesn’t know Americans as well as he believes he does. One line which made me think this was, “In America, We don’t do what’s easy. We do what’s necessary.” This may be true of generations past but I’m not so sure America still feels this way. Obama’s vision will mean civil action. This has worked well in nations across the world, but this is America. Here we watch problems on televsion from our couches for entertainment. Other countries are starving while obesity is an epidemic here. We have ‘gourmet’ meals you can prepare in the microwave in under five minutes. We have peanut butter and jelly in the same jar! America’s comfort level is being challenged. Personally, I love it! I’m intrigued by anarchy. It’s about time people got agitated and involved. I really do hope Obama’s plans pan out and I hope everyone else is as eager to help because it is important. Obama and I agree this is an important moment in history for America. People sometimes have a hard time grasping the idea that history is continuous. We are not done, we never are. I don’t see things half as positively as our president, but I hope he proves me wrong.

Oh yeah, and one more thing. “You don’t mess with Joe!”

This is a slightly modified article I wrote for my school’s newspaper, The Stylus:

It seems Barack Obama’s presidency may be getting off to a bad start. His first days in office have been similar to ex-President Bush’s, full of criticism and disenchantment. Change has come to America, or has it? Is America really ready for change? The election hyped as uniting Americans may have left us more divided than ever.
President Obama has hit the ground running tackling gender equality, children’s healthcare, and now the mortgage crisis. I had the displeasure of catching the signing of the SCHIPS bill on Fox News, or the anti-Obama network. The live coverage was followed by flashing red words like communism and socialism followed by a very irate and ignorant Glenn Beck. Only someone as pigheaded as he could make a bill that will bring quality healthcare to 4 million children sound like a bad thing.
Conservatives are apparently worried all these bailouts will lead to too much dependency on government. God forbid a government should work to help its citizens. The irony is conservatives seem unaware the government’s power grew tremendously under President Bush. Apparently civil rights infringements and invasions of privacy are fair game, but a helping hand is to be turned away with disdain.
President Obama may look as good as Che’ Guevara on a t-shirt but his plans are hardly a red scare. Obama’s plans are more reminiscent of the progressive acts of Franklin D. Roosevelt during the depression in the 1930s. FDR’s approach was also met with criticism at first but I’d bet you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who would say he did a bad job now.
President Obama is franticly taking the wheel of the sinking ship that is America. Mistakes have been made and he knows this. “I screwed up,” he said when some of his presidential picks turned out to be flops. Turns out Timothy Geithner, the Secretary of the Treasury doesn’t pay his taxes. Are you really that surprised? It’s no secret people in government are corrupt; it seems to come with the territory. I don’t trust the government, regardless of who is the president. But Obama is facing more dissent than he deserves. At least he is able to admit his mistakes, unlike our last president.
Obama seems to have dropped the Martin Luther King speech thing as he is finally experiencing what it’s like to be hated. In November he had reggae songs written about him, in February the honeymoon seems to be over. Rush Limbaugh is hoping he fails. Sean Hannity is counting down each of his first one hundred days by revealing what he calls “The real Barack Obama.” Maybe it’s time Republicans found out what it’s like to hate their president. Maybe this time they can be the ones confused when this guy wins his second term. I mean sure Bush got plenty of dirt from John Stewart and MSNBC, but this stuff seems a little more malicious. Glenn Beck’s show even has arabic lettering scrolling on the bottom of the screen. That is just in bad taste. I’m not sure if any president has had to deal with such criticism right from the start of their first term.
Our congressmen are at each other’s throats. I see bad things happening if our people in government continue to act the way they are. Congress needs to forget party lines and work together with President Obama so that we can solve our multiplying problems. We don’t have time for this.
